What is GATT?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can cause blindness by damaging the visual nerves as a result of excessive increase in intraocular pressure. GATT (Gonioscopy Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy) is an effective and safety surgical treatment method performed by creating small incisions for the treatment of glaucoma. It is a modified version of glaucoma surgery (trabeculotomy) that has been going on for more than 50 years.

In which situations is GATT applied?

It is a method that can be applied to patients who use more than one eye pressure medication, who are allergic to drugs and who do not see the benefit of drugs in reducing eye pressure. It can be applied in both adults and children. GATT is a preferred method for safer and faster recovery compared to suture glaucoma surgeries which is obstruction of the tubes placed in the eye, the need for prosthesis.

How is GATT applied?

GATT is performed through the processes of entering the eye through a small incision of approximately 1.0 mm in size around the cornea, cutting the mesh in the eye and opening channels, without touching the outer surface of the eye.

What is the Duration of Hospitalization in GATT?

GATT is a treatment that is usually completed in less than an hour under local anesthesia with an outpatient method.

What Should Be Done After GATT Treatment?

After surgery, the eye is usually covered with an eye patch and protected overnight. The morning following the surgery, it is removed and examined by the doctor. Eye drops are prescribed to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. For several weeks after surgery, the ophthalmologist observes the patient closely. Recovery may take up to 12 weeks after your surgery to complete.
