Knee Arthroscopy in Turkey

Overview

What is Knee Arthroscopy?

Knee arthroscopy is a surgical technique which used for the diagnosis and treatment of knee joint problems. During the procedure, very small incisions are made and a small camera called an arthroscope is placed on the knee. This camera allows the inside of the joint to be viewed through a screen. The surgeon can examine the problem in the knee or correct the problem using small instruments if necessary.

Arthroscopy is also used to diagnose a variety of knee problems, such as a meniscus tear or a misaligned knee cap (patella). It is also used for the treatment of meniscus tears and ruptured joint ligaments.

When Is Knee Arthroscopy Applied?

After clinical and medical examinations for knee pain, knee arthroscopy may be recommended. Arthroscopy is an ideal way to find the source of knee pain and treat the problem.

With arthroscopic surgery, knee injuries can be diagnosed and treated, including:

  • Anterior or posterior cruciate ligament tears,
  • Meniscus tear,
  • Misalignment of the knee cap,
  • Fractures in the knee bones,
  • Baker’s cyst (fluid-filled cyst at the back of the knee).

How is Knee Arthroscopy Performed?

Firstly, It is decided which anesthesia technique will be applied to the patient before the knee arthroscopy surgery. The type of anesthesia in knee arthroscopy is generally spinal anesthesia (numbing from the waist down). However, the most appropriate type of anesthesia for the patient is decided according to the results of the necessary tests.

Secondly, the procedure is started by making one or several small incisions in the knee. Sterile saline is pumped to expand the knee joint. This makes it easier for the surgeon to see inside the joint. The arthroscope enters one of the incisions and the surgeon examines the joint through the camera. The inside of the knee joint is viewed on a monitor.

When the surgeon finds the problem, they can insert small instruments into the incision site to correct the problem. When the surgery is complete, sterile saline is drained from the joint and the cuts are sutured.

What is the Duration of Hospitalization in Knee Arthroscopy?

For most patients, surgery takes less than an hour. You are discharged on the same day or stay in the hospital for 1 night.

What Should Be Done After Knee Arthroscopy?

After the operation, the leg should be kept high. Ice should be put for a day or two to reduce swelling and pain. Post-operative ice helps reduce swelling and minimize pain.

A home exercise program is given to help the knee heal, or a physical therapy program may be recommended until you can use the knee normally. Exercises are necessary to improve range of motion and strengthen muscles. Very good results are obtained with proper care and application of postoperative procedures.

Spine surgery isn’t for everyone. In fact, 90% of patients don’t actually need neck surgery to get back to normal.

If you’ve seen a neck doctor elsewhere who recommends spine surgery, make sure your diagnosis is correct before saying yes or no. Make an appointment with an OrthoIndy spine specialist and find out what’s really going on back there.

My aunt had a knee replacement surgery on both her knees and we've seen an incredible progress eventhough it's only been 2 weeks. Doctor is amazing, hospitality is another level, nurses and all procedures are highly professional. As someone who has been to many big hospitals in Turkey, I must say this one is by far the best cause they're health-oriented as opposed to money oriented. Definitely recommend it to anyone especially for orthopedic surgery and physiotherapy.
